Without further ado Alys Beach announces the 25 digital artist finalists who will display their art at the Fifth Annual Digital Graffiti Festival and compete for $10,000 in cash prizes! This juried festival awards prizes in various categories and judged by a panel of art and industry experts. There were hundreds of submissions from artists from around the world eager to have their work displayed on the famous white walls of Alys Beach.

Digital Graffiti is the world’s first projection art festival and draws over one thousand spectators from around the world. Growing in number each year Alys Beach expands the festival for 2012. For two days guests can enjoy this one-of-a-kind event!

Friday, June 8^th, the Gallery Stroll is presented which allows guests to interact with the artists in a salon-style setting. The Caliza Restaurant will be taking a limited number of reservations for dinner and a cash bar at the Caliza Pool will be offered. The festival continues on Saturday, June 9^th at Fonville Press on the Red Carpet with VIE Magazine. Festival gates open for a show like no other! A Holiday on South Walton Beaches!!

There is no better place to be this holiday season than at the beach! This Florida girl’s idea of a white Christmas includes walking in the snow-like sand of South Walton Beaches with my bare feet — where the temperatures are in the mid-to-high 60’s and wearing a scarf and boots never cross my mind!

On specific evenings throughout the week you can find lots of great events and activities going. For instance, try visiting the Seaside Amphitheatre for an outdoor concert under the stars. These concerts feature performances from talented, local musicians. They are free and open to the public. Included in the festivities are outside holiday movies on the big screen, visits with Santa, Art-Walks, and New Year’s Celebrations.

For those who don’t mind the cold, WaterColor presents The Polar Bear Dip. Take the plunge into 2012, on January 1^st at 8:00AM. Bike trail along 30A in South Walton offers scenic route on two wheels

The wide, paved path stretches over 19 miles, through coastal communities, across bridges, past flowering bushes, wetland plants, colorful shops and state parks.

The Timpoochee Trail, as it is formally named, runs along Walton County’s Scenic Highway 30A from beginning to end.

It’s considered a multi-use path, but about 75 percent of its traffic consists of visitors riding beach cruisers or comfort bikes.

“They park their cars and unless they have to go to the grocery store, they ride their bikes,” said Michele Foreman, who owns 30A Bike Rentals, one of a dozen rental businesses along that stretch.

The bikes, which can be rented for anywhere from a few hours to a week, have one speed and one way to brake, by pedaling backward.

Cyclists sit upright on padded seats, unlike road bikes used by more serious cyclists.

Also popular on paths like Timpoochee Trail are “comfort bikes,” which are similarly styled in that you sit upright, but are equipped with gears and hand brakes.

The bikes are used for recreation, to carry folks along scenic stretches of the partially shaded path. They are also transportation for vacationers who travel back and forth between coastal communities.

“We usually stay in the Seagrove area,” says Jim Rice, an Ohio man who vacations regularly in the area. “So that means we can ride our bikes for breakfast in the morning and Rosemary Beach for lunch.

“We love touring through the little neighborhoods,” he adds. “That’s part of the attraction here — not just the beaches, but the bike path.”

Rental agencies deliver the bikes to visitors and pick them up, which makes it easy for folks just coming into town. They provide combination locks, baskets and helmets. Prices start at $10 for a half-day rental and range from $45 to $75 for a full week.

When the path is crowded, riders have to weave and brake frequently, as well as watch for cars turning in and pulling out of driveways and side streets. That makes it less desirable for serious cyclists.

“It would be better if it were a little safer,” said Bruce Braseth, who owns Dragon Sports in Fort Walton Beach. “But cyclists are just happy to have a bike trail anywhere.”

The trail crosses over or near water a dozen times in the 19-mile stretch. In the open spaces between communities, the path is so quiet you can hear birds singing and the wind rustling through the foliage.

“From spring to summer, it’s always full,” said Jeremy Keeney, who owns Bob’s Bicycles in Mary Esther, adding that he wishes the area had more options for cyclists.

“I think more people would be inclined to get on a bicycle and ride if there were more areas like that.”

Beaches of South Walton Coastline Unaffected and Ready for Summer Travel!

Visitors continue to enjoy great weather and events along Beaches of South Walton’s 26 miles of unaffected coastline, as the destination prepares for a new international airport and an influx of summer travelers.

“The daily headlines might be full of doom and gloom, but what our visitors are seeing are emerald waters and white sand beaches,” said Tracy Louthain, director of communications for the Beaches of South Walton Tourist Development Council (TDC). “Our community is prepared for any potential impacts, but our primary message is that our destination is open for enjoyment.”

Visitors flocked to the destination for Mother’s Day weekend to enjoy a multitude of events, sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s. The region is now gearing up for a busy summer travel season, marked by all-new air service from major cities around the country.

New air service by Southwest Airlines to Northwest Florida is on schedule to begin May 23 to the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. Nonstop service will be available from markets including Orlando, Nashville, Baltimore and Houston via Southwest and from Atlanta via Delta.

Lodging partners are preparing for the summer season with a host of travel packages and events, including sand sculpture demonstrations along Rosemary Beach, Le Grande Cirque performances in Sandestin, movie nights in WaterColor, the Digital Graffiti festival in Alys Beach, and many more.

Oil Status

According to the latest projections from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the oil slick in the Gulf is more than 150 miles from Beaches of South Walton and winds continue to move oil away from Florida waters. The TDC and lodging partners are monitoring conditions closely, and partners are developing generous travel policies should any of the beaches be impacted. Visitors are encouraged to contact their lodging provider directly to discuss specific policies and programs. To keep visitors informed about beach conditions and the county’s preparedness the TDC is continuing to post daily updates and images on www.BSWupdate.com, including information on a fully funded action plan to protect the destination in the event of oil reaching the shore. Walton County to celebrate Scenic Highway Day

The Friends of Scenic 30A invite families and friends to celebrate a day of fun and education on March 26 and 27 for Scenic Highway Day.

Bill Freeze, chairman of the Friends of Scenic 30A, said 30A is the only county road in the state to receive this designation.

“This is a pretty prominent designation,” he said. “The people here are privileged to have such a beautiful, natural area to live in.”

County Road 30A first earned its designation as a Florida scenic highway in May of 2008, since then the friends have been working to maintain and improve the overall traveling experience along the corridor. In celebration of its designation, the friends will be hosting an opening ceremony for the celebration March 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the Walton County District 5 office on Logan Lane.

“We want to make it a fun and educational day and celebrate being part of the state scenic highway system,” said Vivian Shamel, citizen planner for Walton County.

The opening ceremony will include a short documentary on coastal dune lakes, followed by a brief presentation about the Florida Scenic Highway program.

The following day visitors can ride on a free trolley that will take them to 26 various spots along the scenic corridor, making stops from Topsail Hill State Park to Rosemary Beach.

In addition to the trolley ride, local businesses will be offering specials and discounts to Scenic Highway Day participants.

Freeze said the friends plan to make Scenic Highway Day a yearly event.

“The event is free of charge,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for the family to come out and enjoy themselves.”
